William Hooper of North Carolina was a leader in the American Revolution and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The collection contains a biographical sketch of William Hooper by his nephew Archibald Maclaine Hooper that appeared in the in 1822; a letter from John H. Craig, British commander at Wilmington, N.C., to Hooper, 1781, concerning business of the North Carolina revolutionary government; and a writ signed by Hooper in the 1770 Chatham County, N.C., case of Peter O'Neal versus Charles Harrington. William Hooper (June 28, 1742 – October 14, 1790) was an American Founding Father, lawyer, politician, and a member of the Continental Congress representing North Carolina from 1774 through 1777. Hooper signed the Continental Association and the United States Declaration of Independence. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Hooper graduated from Boston Latin School and Harvard College before studying law under James Otis, a popular attorney in Boston who was regarded as a radical.
